What you get

Most first vegetable gardens fail for simple reasons: too little sun, tomatoes planted before the last frost, the wrong soil, or watering that is all or nothing. This book fixes every one of them with clear steps and real numbers, so your first season actually puts food on the table.

You will learn how to measure sun hours with a notebook, find your USDA hardiness zone and local frost dates, and turn them into a personal planting calendar. Build a 4x8-foot raised bed in an afternoon from a complete lumber and cut list, and calculate exactly how many cubic feet or yards of soil to buy. No yard? The container chapter gives you a pot-size table for every crop, plus a six-container balcony plan.

Inside you also get a simple compost recipe, a week-by-week indoor seed-starting timeline, the math for watering (about 20 gallons a week for a 4x8 bed), and fertilizing without guesswork. The crop guide covers 25 easy vegetables and herbs with spacing, days to harvest, sun needs, timing relative to frost, companion notes and common problems.

Then keep the harvest coming with succession planting, a square-by-square bed layout for spring, summer and fall, planting calendars for zone groups 3–4, 5–6, 7–8, 9–10 and 11+, safe and legal organic pest control, season extension, harvesting and storage charts, a realistic budget, the 12 most common beginner mistakes, and a first-season action plan you can follow week by week.

More gardens are lost to inconsistent watering than to any pest. Too little and plants wilt, stall and turn bitter. Too much and roots rot. Erratic watering causes cracked tomatoes and blossom end rot. The goal is deep, regular watering that keeps soil evenly moist, not soggy. Most vegetable gardens need about 1 inch of water per week from rain plus watering combined. In hot, dry, windy weather or sandy soil, that can rise to 1.5 or 2 inches. In cool spring weather, less. One inch of water over 1 square foot is 144 cubic inches. A gallon is 231 cubic inches. So 1 inch over 1 square foot is about 0.62 gallons . Worked example: Your 4x8 bed needs 20 gallons a week. Your hose fills a 5-gallon bucket in 1 minute, so it flows at 5 gallons per minute. That bed needs about 4 minutes of hand watering per week, split into two sessions of 2 minutes each, aimed at the soil. If it rained half an inch, cut that in half. A simple rain gauge costs a few dollars. Put it in the open near the garden. After each rain, note the amount and subtract it from the week's 1 inch. Without...
