Most vending advice is either selling you a "turnkey" package or showing you a full machine and a big number. This book does neither. It shows you how a small vending business actually makes money, where it loses money, and how to decide before you spend a dollar.
You get three worked profit-and-loss examples with every assumption labeled, from a quiet office that barely pays to a 24-hour warehouse, plus a simple break-even formula that tells you how many sales a location needs to be worth your time. You learn the machine types, what to inspect on a used machine (a 20-point checklist), and how to turn card reader quotes into the only number that matters: cents per sale.
Then comes the hard part, locations. You get word-for-word walk-in, phone, email and follow-up scripts, answers to common objections, commission math, and a plain-English placement agreement to adapt with your attorney. Sourcing, pricing, par levels, restocking routes and basic troubleshooting are covered step by step.
The legal side is current for 2026: sales tax and how to find your state's vending rules, licenses, FDA calorie labeling, ADA reach ranges, LLC and insurance basics, the 2026 IRS mileage rates, and the FTC Business Opportunity Rule, so you can spot a vending scam in ten minutes. It ends with telemetry, scaling, an official sources list and a 90-day launch plan with clear decision points.

Before you look at a single machine, you need to understand how a vending machine makes or loses money. The good news: the math is simple. The bad news: small changes in a few numbers decide whether a machine is worth your time. Here is how to find the minimum weekly vends a location needs to be worth your time. Use the per-item contribution: what each sale leaves you after product, commission, card fees and spoilage. Average price $2.00. COGS 45% = $0.90. Commission 10% = $0.20. Card fees at 75% cashless x 6% = $0.09. Spoilage 3% = $0.06. Contribution = $2.00 - $0.90 - $0.20 - $0.09 - $0.06 = $0.75 per vend. Fixed monthly costs: reader $12 + insurance $10 + weekly mileage $31.39 = $53.39. Divide by $0.75 = about 71 vends per month just to cover costs, or about 17 a week. Now add your time. If you want at least $25 per hour for 6 hours a month, you need $150 more, or 200 more vends a month. Total: about 271 vends a month, or about 63 vends a week, to make this machine pay you a fair wage at this location. Run this calculation for every location you consider. It turns "this seems busy" into a yes-or-no answer.
